Why Costco's Hot Dog Combo Still Costs $1.50

Almost everything has gotten more expensive since the 1980s, but not the Costco hot dog. The combo holds its price because Costco makes its real money somewhere else: the card you show to get in.

The short version

Costco has charged $1.50 for its hot dog and soda combo since 1985, and its executives keep promising not to change it. The combo is one of the most visible perks of a membership, and membership fees brought Costco $5.907 billion in fiscal 2026. That is why the food court asks for the card, too.

A price that hasn't moved since 1985

Costco's food court combo of a hot dog and a soda has cost $1.50 since 1985. Almost everything around it has gotten pricier since then. In June 2024, NPR estimated that the combo would cost more than $4 if its price had simply kept up with inflation. Costco has not followed. It sold 245.1 million combos in 2025, according to figures from its 2026 shareholder meeting materials reported by Chowhound.

The combo has not stayed frozen in every detail. Costco switched from Hebrew National to its own Kirkland Signature hot dog in 2009, a move Food Republic ties to volume and cost: its kosher suppliers could not keep up, and making its own franks helped hold the price. In late April 2026, it added bottled water as an alternative to the 20-ounce soda. The price stayed at $1.50 either way. Executives treat the number as untouchable: chief financial officer Gary Millerchip told analysts in May 2024 that the $1.50 price was safe, and chief executive Ron Vachris said in March 2026 that it would not change as long as he was around.

Where Costco actually makes its money

To understand the hot dog, look at the membership. In fiscal 2026, the 52 weeks that ended August 30, 2026, Costco collected $5.907 billion in membership fees, up 11 percent from $5.323 billion the year before. The company credited new sign-ups, fee increases and upgrades to Executive memberships. Its net income for the same year was $9.226 billion.

Those two numbers are not directly comparable, since fees are revenue and net income is what remains after all costs and taxes. Still, the scale is telling: the fees are equivalent to nearly two-thirds of the company's annual profit.

Costco's annual report is blunt about it: "The membership format is integral to our business and profitability." The same filing explains that high sales volume, efficient distribution and no-frills, self-service warehouses let it operate profitably at significantly lower gross margins than most other retailers. Fees went up on September 1, 2024, the first increase since 2017: a Gold Star or Business membership in the US and Canada rose from $60 to $65 a year, and an Executive membership from $120 to $130.

Why the hot dog now requires a membership card

If the fee is the product, the hot dog is part of what the fee buys, and Costco made that link explicit in 2024. Its warehouses already checked cards at the door, which kept non-members away from indoor food courts. But some stores have food courts outside the entrance, where anyone could walk up. Starting April 8, 2024, those outdoor food courts began asking for a membership card too. A Costco representative told Nexstar that all 18 locations with outdoor food courts had been instructed to verify membership.

Costco executive Richard Galanti explained that some food courts, particularly those near office buildings and construction sites, had become so busy that members were complaining. In August 2024 the company announced membership scanners at warehouse entrances. The upshot is simple: without a membership card, Costco won't sell you the hot dog.

What a $1.50 promise is really worth

The hot dog shows that a price can work as a promise rather than a calculation. A combo that has not moved in four decades tells members, on every visit, that the store is holding the line on price. Whether the combo earns much by itself likely matters less to Costco than whether it helps keep people renewing a card that costs $65 a year. That also explains why executives keep bringing it up in public. When a finance chief confirms a $1.50 hot dog on an earnings call, it is less a pricing decision than a message to members.

So the combo isn't really the product. The membership is, and the $1.50 hot dog is one of the most visible reasons to keep paying for it. Watch the short video on this page.
